Responsible Sourcing
Sustainability starts at the source
PT SMART Tbk together with our parent company Golden Agri-Resources (GAR) recognises we must source our raw materials (both palm and non-palm) from responsible suppliers who follow the same high standards of production as we do, if we are to fulfil our sustainability commitments. Guidelines outlined in the GSEP and Responsible Sourcing Policy inform our sourcing practices.
We emphasise the importance of these guidelines with all our suppliers, and make substantial investments in time and resources to help our supply chain transform and change for the better.

When palm oil is responsibly farmed, it is an effective way to create jobs and alleviate poverty, and provides opportunities for communities to secure better livelihoods. As one of the largest plantation companies in Indonesia, operating largely in rural and remote areas, we play an active role in the well-being of our employees, and in the wider communities and landscapes where we operate.However, finding the best way to operate sustainably often requires new, innovative solutions. We recognise that this is only possible through working collaboratively with relevant experts and key stakeholders.
Certifications
At the forefront of industry best practices
Industry certification is part of PT Sinar Mas Agro Resources and Technology Tbk , PT SMART Tbk’s (SMART’s) ongoing commitment to responsible palm oil production.
We work closely with nationally and internationally recognised sustainable palm oil certification bodies to set benchmarks against our operations and implement these standards. These measures ensure we remain at the forefront of industry best practices while allowing us to meet the growing demand for certified sustainable palm oil.
PT SMART Tbk (SMART) together with our parent company, Golden Agri-Resources (GAR), has pioneered and adopted policies that involve reducing deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss, and demonstrating respect for indigenous and local communities. We have been accredited by the following sustainable palm oil standard systems for these efforts.

Providing certified sustainable palm oil Together with GAR, we are making continuous progress on our sustainability certification and encourages all our suppliers to achieve sustainable palm oil certification as well. Below is a summary of the volumes of certified sustainable palm oil being supplied to our refineries.
- RSPO certification
- The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil’s (RSPO) objective is to promote the growth and use of sustainable oil palm products through credible global standards and multistakeholder governance. Our operating entity in Indonesia, PT SMART Tbk, joined the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) when it started in 2005. GAR joined subsequently in 2011. To date, the following assets have received RSPO certification.
- ISCC certification
- The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) aims to establish an internationally oriented, practical and transparent system for the certification of biomass and bioenergy. ISCC is oriented towards the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the sustainable use of land, the protection of natural biospheres and social sustainability. Our parent company, Golden Agri-Resources (GAR) is a member of ISCC. To date, the following assets have received ISCC certification:
- ISPO certification
- The Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) Scheme adopted by Indonesia’s Ministry of Agriculture aims to improve the competitiveness of the Indonesian palm oil on the global market, as well as reduce greenhouse gases emissions and address environmental issues. As a major player and employer in Indonesia’s palm oil industry, PT SMART Tbk (SMART) is an early adopter and supporter of the government’s ISPO scheme.
